100 volunteers give up shopping to give back

(Dallas-FW, Nov. 4) – Rise Against Hunger and volunteers in Dallas joined forces in the fight against hunger on Black Friday. In lieu of shopping, more than 100 volunteers packaged over 20,000 highly nutritious meals to fight food insecurity and malnutrition around the world.

Rise Against Hunger meal packaging events are a volunteer-based program that coordinates the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals.

“This was an awesome event, we were so excited we had over 100 people sign up to spend the day with us, instead of our taking advantage of all the sales,” said Jeff Jones, Rise Against Hunger’s Dallas location’s Community Engagement Manager.

Around the world, just over 815 million people lack adequate food. Rise Against Hunger works to meet immediate nutritional needs today and empower the ability to build strong, resilient communities tomorrow.

“This is the perfect time of year to show our gratitude for all that we’ve been given by giving to someone else,” said Jones.

Rise Against Hunger operates meal packaging locations in 20 cities throughout the U.S. and five international locations in South Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines, Italy and India. In 2016, more than 376,000 volunteers from corporations, churches, schools and civic organizations packaged Rise Against Hunger meals. Since 1998, volunteers in the U.S. and worldwide have packaged more than 365 million meals.

Founded in 1998, Rise Against Hunger has delivered aid and disaster relief supplies in the form of food, medical supplies, clothing, school supplies and more to thousands of disaster victims and other hungry and vulnerable people in 74 countries.

The organization’s Dallas-Fort Worth location was founded in 2013. In this location alone, more than 7.4 million meals have been packaged and distributed to beneficiaries in need within 13 countries.
